The Solipsist are a faction of insect-like creatures that roam the area around PATHOS-II. Solipsist also describes the tentacle and scale-like architecture Simon encounters in the vertical slice. Ultimately, while the Solipsist faction was cut from the final version of SOMA, some of the character and architecture models are still included.
Description[]
The origin of the Solipsist faction is unclear. It was likely a byproduct of the WAU's early attempts to imprint brain scans of Pathos-II employees onto unusual bodies that gained some sentience and went rogue, similar to the Fleshers. The Solipsists appear to be calibrated to operate similarly to a hive mind, with a heart-like center. Most Solipsists consist of deep-sea creatures that have been fused with structure gel and possible human bodies, creating an endoskeleton of organic material and overlapping metallic scales.
Behavior[]
The Solipsists general behavior toward the player is that of aggression. This could either be due to the Solipsists mistaking Simon for a Flesher, or Simon being seen as an intruder and threat to the colony. Regardless, the Solipsists demonstrate a remarkably high level of intelligence and skill for a baby hive-mind species Their construction of vast network of tunnels, black smokers, and an ever-increasing number of new Solipsists seems similar to the WAU's attempts to save humanity, albeit with a different goal. The Solipsists rely on structure gel to build and evolve, and their existence is tied directly to the WAU. Like all other gel-infused creations on Pathos-II, the Solipsists act out independently of WAU, but cannot survive independently.
Construction[]
The Solipsists have a very distinctive building style. They build entirely from modified structure gel that hardens into metal-like plates, which are then stacked on one another like scales on a fish. The Solipsists primarily build circular hallways to traverse their buildings, and line these hallways with vein-like pipes - presumably to carry structure gel. These hallways can evoke feelings of traveling inside an organic entity.
