Earth is the third planet in the Solar System. It has a natural satellite in the form of Luna, known colloquially as the Moon, and various artificial satellites.

For billions of years Earth was one of the very few planets known to accommodate indigenous life, serving as the homeworld of the Human species, who by the 21st century would build an advanced technological society the world over, united between the countless nations that existed across the entire planet.

On Friday, January 12, 2103, a cataclysmic event which became known as the Impact Event occurred at 05:13:00 when the Comet Telos collided with Earth, crashing into the Pacific Ocean. Wiping out all life on the surface of the Earth, it brought an end to the global civilization built by Humankind and made the species critically endangered, effectively extinct in the wild as the only known surviving members of the species were the personnel stationed on the underwater research organization PATHOS-II.

Locations

All known countries, regions, cities, and other entities that existed on Earth before the Impact Event in SOMA. Note that the exact geopolitical state of the world prior to the Impact Event is unknown, so any of the polities listed below are based on known nationalities, or were mentioned directly by name in SOMA, including the Sino-Indian Federation. Any city that is mentioned without a confirmed polity, such as Prague, can be listened independently.

North-England

North-England, also known as Northumbria, is a cultural region in Great Britain which used to historically be the Kingdom of Northumbria. It's possible that in the future, it might've become its own country separate from England, especially if England split back up into the original seven kingdoms.

Peter Strasky and Guy Konrad are referred to as North-Englanders.

Equo-America

Equo-America is a country established sometime between 2015–2103. The existence of the country is only shown by Imogen Reed's nationality, Equo-American, with nothing else about the country known other than that, given the name, it is located somewhere in the Americas.

Germany

Germany is a country in Central and Western Europe. The electrical equipment and tool manufacturer Golem is German, and a photo of Berlin can be found at Theta.

The Zentraler Deutscher Kern (English: Central German Core), possibly a German military intelligence agency founded between 2015–2103, is mentioned in the launch logs for the Omega Space Gun as the owner of a project named AUGE (English: EYE) that involved a reconnaissance satellite that was to be launched on January 3, 2103 at 13:00:00. The log lists the mission as complete, meaning it was the last mission undertaken by the Omega Space Gun, eight days and sixteen hours before the Impact Event.

Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat, is an island country in the Arctic, being located between the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, and is the world's largest island.

Greenlander Sarah Lindwall speaks about her homeland in her final moments, revealing that Kalaallit Nunaat had grown significantly (to the point that it's possible that it's no longer a territory of Denmark), mentioning a large city named Nanoq founded sometime in the future and that "there's like 12 million people trying to get around." Whether she's referring to Nanoq or Kalaallit Nunaat as a whole having a 12 million population is unknown, though the wording in the original quote may indicate the latter.[2]

Photos taken by Sarah Lindwall of what is likely Kalaallit Nunaat in the future can be found in the Tau infirmary.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a city in East Asia located on the eastern Pearl River Delta. It is unknown if Hong Kong was a part of the Sino-Indian Federation or if it was an independent city-state before the Impact Event. The only known Hong Kong Chinese person was Maggie Komorebi, although Brandon Wan was born in Hong Kong.

Japan

Japan is an archipelago country in East Asia. The country is the birthplace of neurographing technology, its creator a Japanese man by the name of Nakajima Shin, who performed the first brain scan on an anonymous Japanese woman only known as "Nanami" on March 12, 2014. The most commonly used neurograph "pattern", the Nakajima Neurograph, was named after Shin.

Haimatsu Technologies is a Japanese multinational technology conglomerate who started off sometime between 1900–2000, starting off making both industrial hardware used by companies such as PACE Laboratories and consumer products such as USBs, touch-screen computers, and computer tablets. Between 2015–2103, they had progressed considerably to become a major global corporation who had a stake in the operation of PATHOS-II.

A Japanese scientist by the name of Jin Yoshida worked on PATHOS-II, stationed at Tau, and Haimatsu Technologies had their own Haimatsu Project Manager on PATHOS-II as well, Abbo Sendeyo, who was stationed at Tau and either had a dual function as the Haimatsu Project Manager and the Dispatcher at Tau, or was reassigned from Haimatsu Project Manager to Dispatcher at Tau at some unknown point.

Prague

Prague is a city in Central Europe. It is the location of world-renowned Charles University in Prague, which, in the modern-day, is the capital of Czechia. In the future of SOMA, it is unknown what polity Prague is a part of. Spain

Spain is a country on the Iberian Peninsula in Southwestern Europe. In SOMA the only references to it are as the location of Cádiz where PATHOS-II's auxiliary port is located, and the sight of southwestern Spain on the PATHOS-II Logistics map.

Taiwan

Taiwan is an island country in East Asia. It may have been neighbored by the Sino-Indian Federation and Japan.

Dr. Catherine Chun was born around 2066 in Taipei, the capital and largest city of Taiwan, and resided there during her childhood. She recollects an experience she had in Taipei when she went up the stairs all the way to the rooftop of her building and watched the life of the city.

While Catherine's life between her childhood in Taipei and her career on PATHOS-II is left ambiguous, the university she went to where she got her Ph.D in computer science may have been in Taiwan.
