The Teaser was a reveal trailer made by Frictional Games for SOMA as a custom made demonstration to show off the general atmosphere and themes of SOMA and how the game worked, while not spoiling anything of the game itself. Due to this, the characters, events, and setting are not canon whatsoever to the story of SOMA
The files for the Teaser can be found in the final game, albeit with a lot of the audio used for the Teaser absent. The map that was used in the Teaser is missing a lot of it's assets for some reason, however there is a variant of the map that was customized for promotional screenshots that is complete.
Plot[]
The Teaser takes place from the perspective of a nameless man who wakes up on a table with a mysterious device placed nearby on a smaller table, in a room that appears old and neglected with nothing more in it than shelves lined with maintenance supplies, and another table on the opposite side of the room with a body laying upon it, attached by wires to a similar device as before but with a cover on it. The man walks to the table and recognizes the body to be that of Raznik after identifying the tattoo sleeve on his left arm, and then proceeds to examine a device that looks like an artificial brain and skullcap, which he proceeds to try to insert back into Raznik's head which has a matching artificial skull built inside it. While this seems to function fine at first, with the nearby machine beeping with a flashing red light, indicating that Raznik's real brain is in the machine, a malfunction proceeds to kill Raznik as his body spasms and goes still, before blood leaks from the machine that stores his brain.
Horrified by the display, the man exclaims that Raznik was still alive in shock before looking the room over and noticing a door to his left, which he proceeds to open to enter a small, dead end room with only a damaged floor on one side revealing something underneath it and a cut wire that has fell in a puddle of water that has leaked from a pipe. The man goes over to the wall by the damaged floor which is severely cracked and attempts to pull a piece of the wall out, causing the entire thing to collapse and revealing a completely alien environment made of metal plating, pipes and wires, and strange organic growths surrounding the area he was trapped in. The man proceeds to go through the metal plated corridors, encountering an arachnid creature made out of a similar metal plating and cancerous growths, before arriving to a chamber with a pedestal in the middle of it with a device identical to the one used for Raznik.
The man removes the cover, before throwing it away when he realizes that what is under it is his own brain. The man questions if he is like Raznik as robotic, pointed tentacles grow out of the floor and start stabbing the brain, transforming it slowly, as the material is replaced with something with a similar aesthetic as piping. As the man fails to stop the tentacles from assimilating his brain, he slowly loses consciousness, only to awaken with his brain completely transformed. He states "Are you still in there?... Am I still here?" before the Teaser ends with the phrase "Cogito, ergo sum: I think, therefore I am" flashing on screen.
Fate[]
As nothing in the trailer was meant to be in the final game itself, nothing much except for the atmosphere and themes survive in the final game. However, the metal plated environment covered in wires, piping, and growths is used for Alpha, which the WAU has corrupted, with the Core Isolation Laboratory housing the WAU bearing some resemblance to the chamber housing the man's brain. Looking through the map for the Teaser reveals that the grated floor and domed ceiling of the chamber is the exact same one used for the Core Isolation Laboratory. The wires and strange growths are also used in areas where structure gel has corrupted in the final game.
Behind the Scenes[]
The words on Raznik's arm read "COGITO ERGO SUM", being another reference to the phrase.
